Summer's Lesson part 3

What's in a name?

In today's society, it's all too common to see people young and old judging things for their label.  If you're buying perfume, why not get it from Victoria's Secret? If you're buying a sweatshirt, why not get it from Abercrombie and Fitch? For something created merely to simplify life, labels certainly have come a long way.  Take my last name, for example.  When people hear my name they associate me with my family and judge me accordingly.  They may think "if she's anything like her father, she's a loquacious loner" or "if she's anything like her sister, she's funny and reliable".

Labels can be harmful, especially when it comes to religion.  You might meet the love of your life, but you won't be able to marry them because they don't eat dead pig or they didn't get water sprayed on them as a baby.  Somehow, a person's love for religion or lack thereof gets in the way of their love for mankind.  If someone likes brocolli can you no longer associate yourself with them? If someone's a vegetarian must you convert them to carnivoriarity (that should totally be a word)?Of course not.  In small matters, we accept people's differences and encourage others to do the same.  So why is it that we can't do the same when it comes to larger matters? With that in mind, what makes one matter larger than the other? Why do some lifestyle choices hold more importance than others? What it all boils down to is respect.  How much are you willing to base your respect for someone on their true selves rather than their lifestyle choices? If everyone asked themselves this before judging someone, there would be significantly less discrimination.

Since I can't ask everyone to ask themselves that, I'll start with you.  Can you promise to at least think before judging a book by its cover? kthxbai.

What's in a name?

Absolutely nothing.

Less than three,

~ Summer
